Dentsville High School graduate returns
to his love of 1964
By Ellen Fortson
“I used to have a 1964 Corvair when I went to
Dentsville High school many years ago,” Wayne McPherson said. “About
two years ago, I told my brother Don, I wished I had the Corvair back.
It was a sign of the times, good times.”
Seeking the car of his youthful dreams,
McPherson searched for the body of a ’64 Corvair Spyder convertible.
Within months, he and his brother found a model that needed major work
to mold it into the turbo–charged automobile of his dreams. McPherson
knew it needed a complete makeover, from hood to floorboard. He accepted
the challenge.
“It took 18 months to restore,” said
McPherson. Mac McNeeley, McPherson’s mechanic, had to order a new
engine and a new transmission to put new life into the convertible which
took at least six months in the body shop. After Mac McNeeley finished
the fined tuned engine work, the interior was gutted, new carpet and
upholstery installed, side–vent windows restored, and the signature
glove compartment put back to original condition to put the finishing
touches to the premiere car of teenagers in the ’60s. |
